We successfully launched our first Elder Care Awareness Workshop in Kumasi on April 12, 2023. The workshop aimed to educate community members, caregivers, and families about the unique needs and challenges faced by elderly individuals in our society.

Workshop Objectives

The primary objectives of the workshop were:

  • Increase awareness about elder care needs
  • Provide practical caregiving skills
  • Address common health issues affecting the elderly
  • Promote intergenerational understanding
  • Connect families with available resources

Key Topics Covered

Participants engaged in interactive sessions covering:

  1. Physical Health Management: Understanding age-related health conditions and medication management
  2. Mental Health Support: Recognizing signs of depression and dementia in elderly individuals
  3. Nutrition and Diet: Age-appropriate nutritional requirements
  4. Safety at Home: Creating elder-friendly living spaces
  5. Social Engagement: Preventing loneliness and isolation

Community Response

The workshop attracted over 80 participants, including family caregivers, community health workers, and social workers. Many expressed gratitude for the practical knowledge gained and requested more frequent sessions.

One participant, Mr. Kwame Asante, shared: "I've been caring for my aging mother but didn't realize some of the mistakes I was making. This workshop opened my eyes to better ways of supporting her."

Future Initiatives

Building on this success, we plan to:

  • Establish monthly elder care support groups
  • Develop a mobile clinic for home visits
  • Create educational materials in local languages
  • Train community volunteers as elder care advocates

Our commitment to elder care reflects our belief that every individual deserves dignity and respect in their later years.
